About Sexual Violence: Myth vs. Fact

  • Incest may be known as: Sexual activities between persons who are related to each other whether or not they live in the same house.
  • In 2005, the New Mexico Statewide Victimization Survey showed 97% of children 12 years of age or younger are sexually abused by someone they know; most often their father, uncle or stepfather
  • Future predisposition of teen pregnancy: Maybe increased likelihood in comparison to non-sexually abused children
  • Alcohol, GHB, Ecstasy, Rohypnol, and Ketamine can all be used to incapacitate a person for the purpose of a sexual assault.
  • Human Trafficking is known as a form of modern day slavery

About Sexual Violence: Set Clear Family Boundaries

  • Discuss and communicate boundaries. Explain what they are and how to set boundaries in a healthy and safe manner.
  • Discuss respect, self-respect and respect for others.
  • Discuss the right to be safe and the right to get help.
  • Discuss responsibilities and the fact that each person is responsible for their own actions.
  • Remind adults, children and youth that every family member is entitled to privacy while dressing, bathing etc.
  • Teach children how to say no to uncomfortable things.
  • Help children to know the different types of body parts they have, who is allowed to see them and when or why.
  • Seek help from your local, state or national organizations to communicate with your family about Primary Prevention.
